Moving 4014

They are using "panel track", which are full-scale track pieces. The workers pull 4014 along, unbolt the panel behind it and then leap-frog that panel ahead. They'll do this until they make it to the nearest rail line.

I hope there not taking it in for just a cosmetic restoration. It would be fun to see a Big Boy operating under it's on steam.

UP is going to fully restore it and run it. Actually, it's more than a full restoration, as they have to bring it into compliance with current FRA rules.

Ooooh. The 4-8-8-4 was just an incredibile machine in it's day.

Interesting that they're bringing this one all the way from California to Cheyenne, wyoming when there's another 4-8-8-4, #4004, sitting in Holliday Park right there in Cheyenne already. I actually got inside the cab of 4004 and also 4005 in Denver about 12 years ago because they were both was unsecured, unattended and sadly neglected. The boiler faces are amazing in their own right. Would have been something else to run one.

Murph, I imagine that UP determined that 4014 was in better condition. They did mention that the CA museum guys had been keeping the bearings greased.
