Since the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was initially laid with 15ft fishbelly rails (most likely cast iron), it wasn't a very smooth ride. They upgraded the line within 7 years as traffic increased and rail problems continued with the short fishbelly rails prone to breakage and misalignment.
