Most wars are caused, more or less, by stupid and arrogant miscalculations. That was probably truest for the First World War.

Recently read a history of the lead up to WWI called The Sleepwalkers. Its a look at the various state actors and some others involved with the decisions to go to war. Other than a couple of malevolent lesser players, none of them wanted to go to war. However, they all believed they could safely take the "next step" along the way without starting a war. It was scary to read how easily they fooled themselves.
